True Sport is publicly recognizing Canada Games athletes who are contributing to a positive sport environment. A True Sport athlete is one who embraces the Principles for Sport:

Go For It    O    Play Fair    O    Stay Healthy
Keep It Fun    O    Respect Others    O   Give Back

Kyle Dougan has been playing baseball since the age of four. Now 18 and in charge of the pivotal position of first baseman for P.E.I.’s Canada Games baseball team, his dedication to the sport and to the team is paying off.

Kyle has helped his Tracadie Cross Minor Baseball team earn two provincial titles at the bantam level. He was also selected to six national tournaments, as well as to the 2008 Canada Cup in Medicine Hat. He attained a batting average of 450 at a tournament last summer.

His coach, Bob Doyle, confirms that Kyle never hesitates to Go For It.  “I have coached him for the past six seasons and he can always be counted on to work hard and commit to any team cause.” Coach Doyle praised his high attendance record at practices as well as games, and noted that even in the off-season, when Kyle was also playing junior B hockey and attending classes at the University of Prince Edward Island, he made it a point to attend most of the Canada Games workouts.

The role of first baseman is a vital one: the player at first interacts with every other player on the field, and is the pitcher’s right-hand man. Kyle is an ideal candidate for the role – always willing to help out his teammates and to do the little extras needed to help his team.

Kyle’s first summer job at the Tracadie Cross baseball fields allowed him to Give Back to the community where he got his start. For two summers, he was in charge of maintaining the fields and organizing activities for children in the community.

In his own words:  “The primary goal I have in mind is to play well individually at the Canada Games, however, more importantly I think the team goal of making the medal rounds is the main focus.“ P.E.I. will have a distinct advantage with Kyle at first base!

The True Sport Movement wishes Kyle the best of success at the 2009 Canada Summer Games, and in the future!
