2019 Canada Winter Games Declared a True Sport Event

(Red Deer, Alberta – January 8, 2019) – In recognition of the belief that good sport can make a great difference, the 2019 Canada Winter Games Host Society has declared the 2019 Canada Winter Games a True Sport event. This means that the values of fairness, excellence, inclusion and fun are at the heart of the Canada Games. Athletes, coaches, officials, volunteers and spectators of the 2019 Games are encouraged to bring the True Sport Principles to life through their actions, thereby making a statement about the kind of sport they want to be a part of.

“To create a life-shaping Games experience for all, we commit to uphold the True Sport Principles at the 2019 Games,” said Scott Robinson, Chief Executive Officer of the 2019 Canada Winter Games Host Society. “Fairness, excellence, inclusion and fun are essential to the delivery of good competition in 2019 and are in line with the 2019 Games values of innovative, collaborative, sustainable, frontier spirit, inclusive, authentic and tenacious. Together, we create a positive and memorable sporting experience.”

“We are very pleased that the 2019 Canada Winter Games in Red Deer has demonstrated a commitment to values-based and principle-driven sport by making a True Sport Declaration,” said Karri Dawson, Executive Director of True Sport. “We hope to see all provincial and territorial teams that attend the Games bring True Sport to life – whether it is athletes using sport to give back to their communities or taking anti-doping education programs to ensure they are playing fair and staying healthy. Good luck to all the athletes who will be competing this winter – we’ll be cheering you on as you pursue personal excellence.”
