2020 U SPORTS Men’s Volleyball Championship Declared a True Sport Event!

(Ottawa, ON – March 9, 2020) – The University of Manitoba is excited to declare the 2020 U SPORTS Men’s Volleyball Championship a True Sport Event! The University of Manitoba will host the top eight qualifying teams from participating Canadian universities, including the host team. The teams will compete for the coveted Tantramar Trophy awarded to the national champions.

Through this True Sport declaration, the University of Manitoba joins thousands of Manitobans who have committed to living the True Sport Principles. In 2015, several local organizations joined together to launch True Sport Lives Here Manitoba, the first provincially-led strategy designed to grow True Sport. This initiative was born out of the 2015 Attack on Sport Forum at the University of Winnipeg, which explored challenges facing the province’s sport community amid increasing reports of bullying, harassment and doping, and national studies showing declining participation in sports due to related factors.

The University of Manitoba encourages all involved in this event to share stories and moments that exemplify True Sport throughout the championships on social media using the hashtag #TrueSportMoments. These championships will showcase that True Sport exists from playground to podium.

“We are pleased to see the University of Manitoba display their commitment to values-based and principle-driven sport by declaring the 2020 U SPORTS Men’s Volleyball National Championship as a True Sport event,” said Karri Dawson, Senior Director, Quality Sport at the Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport (CCES). “Instilling character in student athletes through quality sport experiences is a great way to ensure a fair, inclusive and fun environment in which to pursue personal and sporting excellence. We wish all the participating universities and athletes good luck in the competition!”

The 2020 U SPORTS Men’s Volleyball Championship will run from March 13 to 15, 2020 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Tickets are available online.
